Journey 1 Creativity – Day 1 Created Gifts

And so my journey begins! See my post from 30th Dec on my initial thoughts on Creativity. The theme of my first Journey in my series of 9 Journeys each lasting 40 days in 2012 to mark and celebrate 40 years of Travel and trip opportunities with Tearfund.

One great example of creativity being used to bring hope and change is Created Gifts. Its a brilliant initiative and you can read lots more about it here. We bought some of our Christmas gifts from Created this year (as well as Christmas cards) but you can purchase a great range of gifts all year round.

On Creativity

Its the 30th December! Had a really great Christmas with lots of family and friends and now just 2 days until I launch my 2012 Journey! Journey 1 is going to be on the theme of creativity. In some respects I am quite daunted and in other respects quite excited. Creativity is such a vital and important gift: Writing, Music, Poetry, Cooking, Art….. the list is endless and the skills and thought that go into so many things are amazing. But I have to admit that for me it creates a great deal of fear. Whether its a fear of failure, a fear that work created will be judged or fear of not doing it well have so often stopped me from doing it. Which is a kind of madness really! I’ve certainly created some great cakes in 2011…. Resulting in me winning the ‘bake off’ competition at my work with The Chocolate Orange cake and the incredibly named Choca Mocha Latte Tarte. But when it comes to writing or music I’ve really struggled.

I have to admit that I’ve become a far better consumer of creativity (No I’m not just talking about my Wife’s amazing food although that is true). In some respects I’m fine with that as I am glad I can appreciate the writing and music of many others. Rob Bell is someone I greatly admire as he clearly has a gift in creating and communicating with his films, books and brilliant resources. He is clearly a very gifted communicator but is also a very gifted creator and creates some amazing concepts as well as resources. I’ve also got a lot of respect for many singer songwriters and especially the brilliant Foy Vance

But I don’t think that I can just be a consumer, I want to have a go at being a contributor as well. Perhaps it will just remain at cakes but I’m also hoping that as well as writing this blog I will also create some things during my  Creativity Journey. Watch this space and see where we might go! I’m hoping to learn a lot and perhaps create some things along the way. In all my Travels with Tearfund one of the many impressive things about time spent with people in Kenya, India, Russia and Malawi was the way that people with very limited resources could create such brilliant things like Footballs, artwork and gifts…. truly inspiring and putting a lot of that ‘fear factor’ well and truly into perspective!

And so the journey begins…

2012… The Year of the Olympics, The Diamond Jubilee and also the Celebration to mark 40 Years of Tearfund offering trips/travel which is now done through its Transform Programme. Transform are doing quite a few things to celebrate 40 years of trips including an epic 40 Day African Adventure and a Celebration Event in November 2012. The Transform programme seeks to enable people to embark upon an adventure of service and discovery, we like to call it a pilgrimage. I was also really inspired when reading 2 particular books. Mark Powley’s Consumer Detox and Maggi Dawn’s Accidental Pilgrim to take some kind of journey of my own.

So I thought it would be good, a challenge and a chance to discover more by embarking on a journey of my own in 2012. I’m going to be taking 9 Journeys, each one 40 Days in length…. I won’t be physically journeying on transform trips but taking the time to intentionally live out and reflect upon each of the 9 themes for 40 days at a time. Each of my travels with Tearfund to Kenya, India, Russia and Malawi have provided some great, challenging and very humbling experiences, where I have met many very inspiring people and had experiences that have humbled and inspired me and I hope the flavour and spirit of those journeys.

So on January 1st I begin Journey 1 which I have decided to call Detox. The reason for this is that all journeys need time of preparation and I’m going to use Journey 1 to explore that a lot more as well as Road test some challenges (Eating Rice and Beans for a week from 9th Jan)

Other themes for the Journeys will include Generosity, Simplicity, Contemplation, Hospitality and Celebration (Journey 9 to coincide with the Transform 40th Celebration event and to Celebrate the end of my Journey)

I will be blogging, experiencing and reflecting. Activism and thinking about how to Live and Journey through life with greater integrity and with the values that the Journey themes bring out. I’m excited and also daunted. It should be an adventure and I hope to learn, grow and hopefully fundraise a little for Tearfund on the way.
